DESCRIPTION:Join us as the 52nd Newark Black Film Festival opens with a special reception\, screening\, and filmmaker conversation featuring When We Free the World\, the powerful feature-length documentary from acclaimed writer\, activist\, and filmmaker Kevin Powell. \n\n\n\nThe evening begins with an opening night reception\, offering guests an opportunity to gather and celebrate the start of this year’s festival before the screening. \n\n\n\nCentered on the question of modern manhood\, When We Free the World brings together the voices of 70 Black men spanning five generations to explore identity\, fatherhood\, mental health\, healing\, accountability\, and the work of breaking cycles that have impacted families and communities for generations. Through intimate conversations and personal reflections\, the film challenges audiences to consider what freedom\, equity\, and human rights truly mean when applied universally. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, attendees are invited to stay for a special talkback featuring filmmaker and writer Kevin Powell and producer and writer Evangeline Lawson of Brooklyn Diego Productions. The discussion will be moderated by Richard Wesley and Darryl Dwayne. \n\n\n\nAs one of the nation’s longest-running celebrations of Black cinema\, the Newark Black Film Festival continues its tradition of bringing together filmmakers\, artists\, and audiences for meaningful conversations that extend beyond the screen. \n\n\n\nPlease note: Auditorium seating is available on a first come first serve basis for the film screening. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening celebrating New Jersey filmmakers\, storytellers\, and creative entrepreneurs through a special shorts program featuring Operation: Is Jersey the New Hollywood?\, the debut of Talks With Myself Season 6\, Episode 6\, and Atelier: The Story of Brownmill Company. \n\n\n\nOPERATION: Is Jersey the New Hollywood? explores New Jersey’s booming film industry and what its growth means for the people who live and work here. Directed and produced by Brandon Tyler\, the documentary comes from Newark-based creative collective WTH?\, which has grown from a short film into the WTH? Music & Film Festival\, now celebrating its third year. \n\n\n\nThe program also features Talks with Myself\, a Black queer dramedy about Morris\, a man confronting the lies\, choices\, and relationships that have shaped his life. Told through raw livestream confessionals\, this series short offers a deeply human portrait of Black queer life in New Jersey. Now in its sixth season\, Talks With Myself is written\, directed\, and produced by black queer artists\, continuing its acclaimed exploration of identity\, love\, community\, and self-discovery. \n\n\n\nAlso screening is Atelier: The Story of Brownmill Company\, a documentary short about Justis Pitt\, Kwaku Agyemang\, and Taha Shimou\, the three men behind Newark-born fashion brand BrownMill Company. Through archival footage\, mixed-media animation\, and verité-style storytelling\, the film highlights Black entrepreneurship\, legacy\, representation\, cultural preservation\, and collective creativity. \n\n\n\nFollowing the screenings\, attendees are invited to stay for a talkback will with Damon Williams\, co-founder of WTHGlobal production company; Roger Omeus Jr.\, director and writer of Talks with Myself; Erby Beauvil\, producer of Talks with Myself; Anya Dillard\, director of Atelier: The Story of Brownmill Company; and Justis Pitt-Goodman\, owner of BrownMill Company.

Meanwhile\, fraternity leader Julian (Giancarlo Esposito) is determined to maintain the status quo\, while Dap’s cousin\, Half-Pint (Spike Lee)\, struggles to find where he belongs. Since its founding in 1974\, the Newark Black Film Festival has maintained a close relationship with Newark Symphony Hall\, one of the city’s anchor cultural institutions. In the festival’s early years\, Newark Symphony Hall served alongside the New Jersey Institute of Technology as one of its screening venues\, helping bring films that had often only played in arthouse cinemas directly to Newark audiences. That early collaboration reflected a shared mission between the two organizations to make Black cinema and culture accessible to the community\, a partnership that continues this year!
